Detailed History
DIN was founded in 1917 as the Normenausschuss der deutschen Industrie (Standardization Committee of German Industry). Its establishment was motivated by the need to standardize industrial products to improve efficiency and competitiveness during World War I. One of its first major standards, DIN 476, was a standard for paper sizes, which later became the internationally recognized ISO 216. After World War II, DIN was a key player in rebuilding the German economy and became known for its rigorous standards development process.
