SAE: Society of Automotive Engineers
Who They Are & What They Create
SAE International is a professional association and SDO for engineers and technical experts in the aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle industries. They develop standards for the design, manufacturing, and performance of land, sea, and air vehicles. Their standards cover everything from material specifications and testing methods to safety protocols and digital communication systems within vehicles.
Industries Supported
SAE is a pillar in the following industries:
- Automotive (cars, trucks, buses)
- Aerospace (aircraft, spacecraft, drones)
- Commercial Vehicles (construction equipment, agricultural machinery)
- Manufacturing
- Motorsports
Detailed History
SAE was founded in 1905 with the support of influential figures like Andrew L. Riker and Henry Ford. The burgeoning automotive industry was in a state of chaos, with a wide variety of parts and components, making manufacturing inefficient and repair difficult. SAE was created to bring order to this technical anarchy by providing a forum for engineers to share knowledge and standardize parts. In 1916, the Society of Aeronautical Engineers merged with SAE, adding aircraft to their purview. Over the years, SAE’s scope broadened to include commercial vehicles and, later, the burgeoning space industry. SAE standards like the J-series (for automotive) and AS-series (for aerospace) became globally recognized benchmarks for quality and safety.
