We Parted Ways with ASTM – And Why It Matters for the Future of Standards Access

For over five decades, Accuris and ASTM worked together to help engineers, manufacturers, and regulators access the critical standards that power progress and protect public safety.

We’ve made the difficult decision to announce that we will not be renewing our distribution agreement with ASTM – not out of rivalry, but out of responsibility. This decision was driven by one thing only: our customers.

This Is About Customer Trust

At Accuris, we believe standards should be accessible, transparent, and interoperable. They should empower innovation – not get in its way. Over the last year, ASTM has taken a direction that makes that increasingly difficult.

Most SDOs provide high-use content. In contrast, ASTM charges for an expansive catalog – even though most of its titles are never used. Additionally, ASTM requires the use of a non-transparent pricing model for customer requests, making it impossible to ensure our customers receive fair and consistent pricing for similar content, or to offer their materials under market-competitive terms.

In parallel, ASTM is seeking to mandate redirection to its proprietary platform (“Compass”), which does not meet many customers’ usability, integration, and compliance needs across PLM/ERP and audit workflows – areas where Accuris has invested heavily to provide a seamless experience.

We could not – and would not – pass those terms along to our customers and still claim to be acting in their best interest. That’s not who we are.

We Remain Committed to Our SDO Partners

It’s important to be clear: this action is not a reflection of our broader SDO partnerships. Quite the opposite.

We’re reaching out to every one of our standards partners to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to their mission: advancing safety, innovation, and global competitiveness.

Accuris exists to amplify the role of standards bodies – not compete with them. We provide the technology, distribution, and intelligence to help their content reach the people who need it most. And we’re proud to partner with SDOs around the world who are modernizing access, increasing adoption, and driving value together.

What Happens Now

  • No change to your standards access through Accuris. We continue to offer the world’s most comprehensive, integrated standards and regulations library – across 450+ SDOs and regulatory bodies.
  • We retain the right to provide ASTM content through 2026.
  • We’re supporting impacted customers directly with usage summaries, alternative pathways, and transition planning.

Most importantly, our door remains open. We still hope ASTM will return to the table to craft a modern, customer-first agreement that protects their intellectual property while respecting the operational needs of today’s enterprises.

A Call to Lead – Not Silo

This moment is bigger than any single agreement. It’s a reminder that standards only have power when they’re accessible. That partnerships matter more than platforms. That innovation requires trust – and trust requires transparency.

We believe SDOs should be heroes of the global innovation economy. And we remain committed to helping them thrive.

If you’re a customer, a partner, or a peer navigating this shift — our team is here. Let’s keep building the future together.
